How to Redact a PDF — Permanently Hide Sensitive Information

March 6, 2026·By GlowPDF Team

Redacting a PDF means permanently removing or hiding sensitive information before you share it. It's a critical step when distributing legal documents, medical records, financial statements, or any file containing personal information.

The key word is permanently. A common mistake is drawing a black box over text using a regular PDF editor — which looks redacted but can often be removed or the underlying text can still be copied. Proper redaction burns the black box into the page so nothing is recoverable.

What's at Stake: Why Proper Redaction Matters

In 2021, a high-profile legal case was compromised when attorneys filed a PDF with text "redacted" using a black rectangle overlay — but the text underneath was still selectable and copyable by anyone who opened the file. Similar incidents have exposed social security numbers, witness identities, and classified information.

Simply adding a black box on top is not redaction. True redaction removes the underlying data.

GlowPDF's redaction tool handles this correctly — it re-renders the page with the redacted areas filled in, so the original content is gone from the output file.

Common Use Cases for PDF Redaction

  • Legal documents — Hide witness names, addresses, or confidential case details
  • Financial records — Remove account numbers, routing numbers, or salary details before sharing
  • Medical records — Comply with HIPAA by removing patient identifiers
  • HR documents — Share job postings or policies without internal notes
  • Government filings — Remove sensitive data before public disclosure
  • Personal privacy — Black out your address or ID number on scanned documents

How GlowPDF Redaction Works

GlowPDF takes a technically sound approach:

  1. You draw redaction boxes over the areas you want to hide
  2. When you confirm and download, GlowPDF re-renders each affected page with those areas filled in solid black
  3. The output PDF contains the rendered image — the original text or image data underneath is gone

This is not a simple overlay. The output page is a re-rendered version where the redacted content never existed.

Step-by-Step: Redacting a PDF with GlowPDF

  1. Go to GlowPDF's Redact PDF tool
  2. Upload your PDF
  3. Use the redaction tool to draw boxes over the areas you want to hide
  4. Review all pages — make sure nothing sensitive is missed
  5. Click Apply Redactions & Download
  6. The downloaded PDF has the redacted areas permanently removed

Before You Redact: A Checklist

  • Search for all instances — If you're redacting a name or number, make sure it doesn't appear elsewhere in the document (headers, footers, page numbers, metadata)
  • Check metadata — PDF metadata can contain author names, creation dates, or other information. GlowPDF strips common metadata fields during processing
  • Keep the original — Always save an unredacted copy in a secure location. The redaction is permanent in the output file
  • Review on multiple zoom levels — What looks redacted at 100% zoom might reveal partial characters at other zoom levels

Can Redacted Text Be Recovered?

From a GlowPDF-redacted PDF — no. The re-rendering process replaces the page content. There's no hidden text layer, no recoverable data.

This is different from tools that simply add a black annotation on top of the text. Those overlays can be removed in Acrobat or stripped out programmatically.

Is My File Private During Redaction?

Yes. All processing happens in your browser. Your document never leaves your device. This is especially important for legal, medical, and financial documents where confidentiality is legally required.
