Whether you scanned a stack of documents into one massive PDF or received a report and only need pages 3 through 7, splitting a PDF is one of those tasks that comes up constantly. The frustrating part is that most tools either charge for it, require an account, or upload your files to a server.
GlowPDF's PDF splitter does none of that — it runs entirely in your browser.
Why You Might Need to Split a PDF
Here are the most common scenarios:
- Extract a single page — You received a 20-page contract but only need the signature page.
- Break a large scan — A batch scan created one file per session, but you need separate documents per person.
- Remove unwanted pages — The PDF has a blank page or cover sheet you want to ditch.
- Share a subset — You want to send someone only the relevant section of a report.
- Reduce file size — A large PDF becomes more manageable as smaller pieces.
The Three Ways to Split a PDF
1. Extract All Pages Separately
This gives you one PDF per page, packaged in a ZIP file. Useful when you've scanned multiple documents together and need to separate them all.
Use case: 10-page scan → 10 individual PDFs downloaded as a ZIP.
2. Extract a Page Range
Specify a start and end page, and GlowPDF extracts exactly those pages into a new single PDF. This is the most commonly used mode.
Use case: Pages 4–9 of a 30-page document → one clean 6-page PDF.
3. Split Every N Pages
Divide the document into chunks of a fixed size. Useful for batch processing or creating equal-sized sections.
Use case: 30-page document → three 10-page PDFs.
How to Split a PDF with GlowPDF
- Go to GlowPDF's Split PDF tool
- Drop your PDF into the upload zone or click to browse
- Choose your split mode: all pages, page range, or every N pages
- If using page range, enter your start and end page numbers
- Click Split & Download
- Your browser downloads the result — either a single PDF or a ZIP of multiple files
The whole process takes under 10 seconds for most documents.
Does Splitting Affect Quality?
No. GlowPDF splits PDFs at the document level — it doesn't re-render or re-encode pages. Every extracted page is byte-for-byte identical to the original. Fonts, images, vector graphics, and annotations all come through perfectly.
Is It Private?
Yes. Your PDF is processed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded to any server. You can even disconnect from the internet after loading the page and the tool will still work.
Tips for Better Results
- Check page numbers first — Open the PDF in your viewer to confirm the page numbers before splitting. Some PDFs have Roman numeral front matter that shifts the numbering.
- Keep the original — Splitting is non-destructive by design, but always keep a copy of the original file before making changes.
- Combine with merge — Split a document, make changes to individual sections, then merge them back together.
What About Password-Protected PDFs?
If your PDF is password protected, unlock it first using GlowPDF's unlock tool, then split it. Both tools are free and browser-based.
